Riders in ever-increasing numbers are figuring out that their motorcycles are suited for more than the occasional weekend ride.  In fact, touring riders are becoming recognized by the travel industry as a bona fide affinity group worth courting rather than a scourge to be run out of town by the sheriff.  I guess they’ve discovered we can at least write our names...on credit card receipts.

Whatever, the case,  I’ve been working with Whitehorse on a title to help aspiring tourers and veteran riders make sense of all the new gear on the market and offer them a structure for planning a tour.

To complete this project I am collecting pictures that illustrate a range of products, activities and concepts.  I’d like to ask for your help.  Review the list I’ve made out below and if you have pictures that fit, please e-mail them to editor@applachianhighways.com.  Not every photograph submitted will be published, but the more we have to draw from, the more useful this book will be.

Photo Requirements

I’m looking for images shot with a digital camera at 3 megapixels of resolution or higher.  Sorry, I can’t accept film images for this project.  Image(s) should be well lit with no motion blur and may be cropped to fit space or editorial requirements.  When you submit photos, indicate how you would like the photo credit to read.  Here’s an example.

December 2005

Greetings From Appalachian Highways,

2006 is upon us and the crew here at AH (me) is busy paving new trails, figuratively speaking.  I have to wait until mid-January before I can say more about some of things to come, so I’ll save the regular feature for next month.  Right now, I have something better.   I’d like to offer you a unique opportunity to participate in the publishing process.

As some of you know, I’ve been working on a new touring “how to” title for Whitehorse Press to be delivered in mid to late 2006.  As part of the process, I’m collecting pics for the book.

There are a number of slots that I’d like to fill with pictures from people other than myself or product manufacturers.  So, take a look at the list and submit a few of your pics that fit any of the descriptions below.

If you know someone else who takes good pictures, please forward this to them.  Thanks for your help and I look forward to catching up with you this coming year.

Many Happy Journeys!

— Take a look at the requirements and photo list that follow.  If you have an image that fits, it may be published in an upcoming book project!

You must be the rights holder for any picture you submit.  You are granting a one time right to use this picture for this work (and subsequent update editions).  This may include promotional activities related to the book.  For example, a portion of the book may be adapted as a feature article and reprinted.  (I am not compensated for these excerpts, it’s a way to promote the book.)  You retain the right to use the photo for other private and commercial purposes.

If your picture is slated for publication, I may follow up with a specific photo release for you to sign.  Your compensation will include an attribution in the published work (“Photo courtesy of Bob Smith”) and one copy of the book for each published photo.  By submitting photos, you agree that this compensation is satisfactory.

If the attribution for your photo is screwed up due to a mistake on my part or a layout or printing error, the remedy will be a correction in subsequent printing runs.  By submitting your photo, you agree to this provision.

That’s about it folks.  Remember, the deadline is 11:59 p.m., Sunday, January 15, 2006.  Please send me your pics and pass this along!
